STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- While you should never judge a book by its cover, it's been said you can tell a lot about a president from the books lining their office shelves.
With the Presidential election coming up, the crowdsourced online learning platform Course Hero put together this list of presidents, and presidential hopefuls, and the books that shaped them.
- Hillary Clinton -- Democratic Presidential candidate Clinton claims that "The Color Purple" is one of her favorite reads.
- Donald Trump -- Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, has reported that he has been reading "All quiet on the Western Front" while on the campaign trail.
- Barack Obama --President Obama has said that Ernest Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" has inspired him throughout his political career.
- Ronald Reagan -- "The Hunt for Red October" was the first novel published by the U.S. Naval Institute Press and was given to Reagan as a gift. The president then mentioned the book in a press conference, calling it "unputdownable."
- Bill Clinton -- Clinton is not shy about discussing his rigorous reading habits of both thought-provoking non-fiction and playful genre thrillers. His favorite is Marcus Aurelius's "Meditations".
- George H.W. Bush -- Both H.W. Bush and Richard Nixon Nixon were big Tolstoy fans, and Bush has credited "War and Peace" as a book that inspired him and has taught him a lot about life.
- John F. Kennedy -- The name is John. John Kennedy. The 35th president was a big fan of Ian Flemming. Kennedy got into the James Bond series after a friend gave him a copy of "Casino Royale" while recovering from back problems.
- Dwight D. Eisenhower -- When this five-star general wasn't storming the beaches of Normandy or sitting in the Oval Office, he could be found with a copy of Mark Twain's satire, "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court".
- Franklin D. Roosevelt -- He was one of the most influential presidents in modern history. His favorite book? Anything by Rudyard Kipling. His favorite was Kipling's poem "If".
- Abraham Lincoln -- Honest Abe was known for carrying copies of Shakespeare's collected works, from "Julius Caesar" to "Macbeth".
