Some 400 lucky teachers in city public schools will get to see the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Hamilton".
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Some 400 lucky teachers in city public schools, from all boroughs, will get to see a performance of the sold-out Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Hamilton" Wednesday evening.
The performance for educators is a partnership between Teach for America, the Department of Education and Barclays. The show's principals are hoping its message of diversity and inclusiveness will resonate with educators and their students.
The 400 teachers who will see the show were selected by the Department of Education and via lottery by Teach For America New York. This group of teachers is comprised of educators who teach a variety of subjects in schools across the city. It also includes both teachers enrolled in Teach For America and those who are not.
"This partnership is a wonderful opportunity to recognize and thank our city's passionate educators, who work tirelessly to motivate their students and strengthen their school communities," said New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina. "It allows teachers to take the musical back into their classrooms and help bring history to life for those who have not yet seen the show."
According to the DOE, after they see the show teachers will attend a professional development session in March, hosted by the DOE and the Fund for Public Schools, aimed at providing educators with strategies to teach and support diversity in the classroom.
