Standardized test questions: How many can you answer?

The state Education Department has released questions from the 2017 English and math standardized exams.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The state Education Department Thursday released more than 75 percent of the questions from the 2017 English Language Arts and math standardized exams students completed in April and early May.

This is the second year in a row that questions have been released, to promote transparency. The test material is posted online at EngageNY.org

"Our goal is to provide our teachers, administrators and parents with as much information as possible about their students' performance and make it available as quickly as possible," said State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia. 

Here's a few of the third-grade math questions released. See if you can answer them correctly:

  • 1. What number makes the equation 35 divided by X = 7 true? a)5; b)6; c)7; d)8

  • 2. A coach rounded out the number of runners at a track meet to 400. What number could be the actual number of runners? a)383; b)397; c)406; d)447
  • 3. Last weekend Sanjay watched 3 television shows that were each 30 minutes long. He watched one movie on television that was 90 minutes long. What is the total number of minutes he spent watching television? a)100; b)120; c)150; d)180
  • 4. What number multiplied by 4 equals 36? a)6; b)7; c)8; d)9
  • 5. Ms. Perez drove a total of 40 miles in 5 days. She drove the same number of miles each day. How many miles did Ms. Perez drive each day? a)5; b)7; c)8; d)9
