St. Joseph's School in Rosebank and Immaculate Conception School in Stapleton were at risk
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The New York Archdiocese will close 24 Roman Catholic schools in a cost-saving move, though no decisions have been made on Staten Island schools.
The Advance reported earlier this month that St. Joseph's School in Rosebank and Immaculate Conception School in Stapleton were at risk for closure.
But decisions on those two schools were delayed in a Hurricane Sandy-weary borough.
No other borough schools were listed for closure, according to a list on the Archdiocese Web site.
The Archdiocese says it will close 22 elementary schools and two high schools by the end of the school year. A total of 4,724 students will be affected.
Four other schools that were targeted were given a reprieve.
The closings are part of a multi-year restructuring to cut the number of schools with low enrollment.
Since 2003, enrollment has dropped by more than 25,000 students.
