Special education workshop scheduled for parents of children turning 5

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Parents of special needs children who will be entering the school system are invited to attend an information workshop Tuesday, Oct. 14, geared toward helping them understand the "language" of special education and what it means for them.

Sponsored by Families Helping Families, the session will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the first-floor conference room at Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.

Titled "Education Law and Your Rights: The Turning Five Process," some of the topics to be covered include:

  • What is a "functional behavioral assessment" and does your child need one?
  • What is a "behavioral intervention" and does your child need one?
  • How to lay a foundation for appropriate service recommendations
  • How to get an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) program screening
  • What criteria is needed for a child to be assigned a paraprofessional?
  • What is the "least restrictive environment" and what supports are available?
  • The differences between District 75 and the Community School District
  • What is an individualized education plan (IEP) and how to read it?

There is a $10 non-refundable fee for the workshops.
