STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Civic-minded Staten Island high school seniors are invited to learn more about the issues that will shape their community during 2015, during a face-to-face sit-down with Borough President James Oddo.
In addition to his annual Borough Hall open house on January 25, the borough president is hosting a separate session for invited teens on February 3, at 4:30 p.m. at PS 48 in Concord. The event, "A Conversation with the Class of 2015", is a private opportunity for civic-minded students to ask the BP questions about the Island and its future.
"As we begin the New Year, this event is an opportunity for high school students to speak with me face-to-face and ask questions," Oddo said.
"Our conversation with high school students will show them what active civic engagement means."
"Students are our future leaders and I believe it is very important to hear their perspective on local issues and let them know about all the wonderful things going on in our community."
Every Island public, Catholic and private high school will be invited to send up to six seniors to the sit-down. The program calls for students will drive the discussion with questions. Oddo will have slides available to illustrate his responses to key issues raised.
Schools will also be welcomed to record the session so that they can share the information with students.
PS 48 was selected as the venue for the event with the intent to drive home lessons to students about persistence and hard work and the need for civic engagement. The Island's newest school is a facility that Oddo fought to see constructed while he was a City Council member.
